Case Study: Loft installation of a heating system
Problem:
Difficulties obtaining enough hot water on each floor of the house.
Existing system was a combi-boiler situated on the ground floor but could not cope with the capacity or pressure that was required.
In addition to this the space where the new hot-water and heating system needed to be installed required some quick thinking as it was going to be re-located to an apex loft space, that had minimal access and head-height.
Property Type:
5-bedroom, 3-bathroom house in Sheffield
Review of existing situation:
The owner needed a solution that would allow them a constant uncompromised flow of hot water. The existing system was struggling to cope with flow and demand.
Solution:
Remove existing combi-boiler from ground floor. Replace with an Albion 300 litre
un-vented cylinder with an Ideal Vogue Max 32KW heating system.
Challenges:
In order to provide enough hot water a new system would need to be fitted. However, where the new system needed to be placed was within an Apex room with reduced head-height.
The owner needed to ensure that a big enough area of access could be obtained into the loft space. Given the narrowness and head height difficulties in the loft, the water tank (cylinder) which should be fitted upright was instead it fitted with one that is designed to be placed horizontally. This is the enlarged loft entrance to enable the cylinder to go up into the loft.
The additional difficulties that we also encountered with this project involved the weight of the cylinder. Because it was so heavy the floor needed to be reinforced in order to cope with the weight of the cylinder, especially once it was filled with water. This is the reinforced floor in the loft.
In addition to this was the turnaround time on the project. It was an urgent fit and required us to re-arrange our diary to accommodate the request. The weather also played a part in the urgency as it was a very cold and snowy week (Jan 2021).
Our ultimate aim was to help the owner to achieve his goal of getting all renovation work on the house completed on time and together. The house renovations were taking place in a tight time frame which meant re-arranging some commitments and sourcing the replacement system at short notice to help them achieve their goals.

Outcome:
A fully fitted cylinder with an Ideal Vogue heating system that the owner is incredibly pleased with, it is efficient and effective and does exactly what they needed it to do. They are delighted and so are we.
